Ranveer: I Was Really Happy That Anushka Said Yes To Dil Dhadakne Do
The actor had even indicated to director Zoya Akhtar that the NH10 actress would decline the film
Bet you can’t wait to see rumoured ex-flames Ranveer Singh and Anushka Sharma create magic on screen once again after Band Baaja Baaraat and Ladies vs Ricky Bahl. But even minus Ms Sharma, Ranveer aka Kabir Mehra is a treat to watch on screen. And as SpotboyE.com pinned him down for a quick chat, we found out hes just as entertaining off-screen too.
Dil Dhadakne Do is a multi-starrer. Did you feel an added pressure of having to stand out from the rest of the cast?
Thinking like that is a sign of insecurity. Im not an insecure actor. I loved the part that Zoya (Akhtar, the director) offered me. Within the first 20 minutes of the narration, I decided in my head that I'll be doing this film. When I was leaving Zoyas house after the narration, I told her at the door, ‘Im on board. Lets start the paperwork. Each character in the film is amazing. And honestly, all the characters are replaceable except Anil Kapoors.
Apparently, when Zoya told you that she would approach Anushka Sharma to play your love interest, you wished her All the best because you were sure Anushka would decline it.
Yeah, I had said that to Zoya (laughs).
Did you think shed say no because of your history together?
No, that was not the reason. Anushka was making certain cinematic choices, which led me to believe that she would not be interested in doing a film like this. It had nothing to do with our history. I just thought it was a long shot..JPG)
And what was your reaction when she said yes?
I was over the moon. She brings a certain amount of star value. Plus, my track is such that it requires me and Anushka to play off each other. She is a fantastic actor. So I was really happy that she said yes.
After Dil Dhadakne Do, you dived headlong into Bajirao Mastani. Arent Zoya and Sanjay Leela Bhansali worlds apart as directors?
With Bhansali, its all about drama, and Zoya likes to keep it natural. So whatever youre not supposed to do on Zoyas set, youre supposed to do on Bhansali's set and vice versa. But by the end of Dil Dhadakne Do shoot, I was like, I have to go to a Bhansali set. I need some drama, I need to scream and shout. (laughs)
Along with you, Priyanka Chopra also had to make that transition from Zoyas urbane film to Bhansalis period drama
Bajirao Mastani was the first time I saw Priyanka Chopra unsure of what she was doing. She was very comfortable in Gunday and Dil Dhadakne Do. But during Bajirao Mastani, she was like, What is going on? I quit. Im going home. She is a fantastic actor and it was great to see her challenged. Ive worked with Bhansali before, so I knew his style. He throws you out of whack if youre accustomed to a certain style of working. And Priyanka was thrown out of whack..JPG)
Lastly, you went through a rigorous process to get into the shoes of Bajirao.
I was locked up in a hotel room for three weeks, trying to create my character. His accent, energy, pitching Bhansali left all of that to me. How does Bajirao talk? How does he sit and stand? What is Bajiraos default expression? I had to create all of that and bring a Marathi flavour to it. Finally, I gave my first shot and thats when Bhansali could put a face and character to his Bajirao. Imagine making your biggest film ever and not knowing what your lead actor will bring to the table. But he had that faith in me.
